Centered Riding® was developed
by founder Sally Swift as a way of
connecting the mind, center and body
in riding. It is based on philosophies
learned in the Martial Arts and the
Alexander Technique. Use of the CR
basics helps all riders to use their
bodies correctly and more effectively.
Horses respond by becoming more responsive,
better balanced and more relaxed,
allowing them to perform with greater
freedom of movement. The techniques
of Centered Riding can be applied
to any discipline, and will improve
your overall comfort, confidence and
communication with your horse. |

While teaching a clinic in Pagosa
Springs, Colorado in September 2009
I was lucky enough to visit Out West
Saddlery. The sweet barn look from
the outside hid a treasure trove for
the unsuspecting visitor on the inside.
I met owners Bob and Terri Beecher
while touring around their wonderful
shop, which features their handmade
leather products, saddles and much,
much more. Their passion is educating
horse owners and horse health practioners
about whole horse health. They specialize
in teaching horse owners how to evaluate
the fit of any saddle on any horse.
Their handmade saddles are designed
to allow for a balanced, centered
seat for the ride and a comfortable
fit for the horse. Their shop also
specializes in very high quality,
creative, truly custom cowboy gear
that is made on site and results in
a one of a kind product! They also
carry a wide variety of other unique
items from horsehair mecates to watch
fobs.
I was lucky enough to try out one
of their saddles designed and hand
crafted by Kelli Day, an assistant
saddler employed by Out West Saddlery.
Kelli's saddle was very comfortable,
offered a very balanced, deep seat
and was a beauty to look at. Take
a moment to visit their website and
have your wish list ready!

Rider Horsemanship’s approach
to teaching horses and humans focuses
on creating a space where trust (connection),
communication and partnership form
– in mind, body and soul. Our
approach is one that seeks mindfulness
– a way of being with horses
that asks us to be conscious of our
intent and actions, and always present.
The key concepts of Rider Horsemanship's
Approach lies in the development of
communication, confidence, balance,
and harmony between horse and rider.
The development of communication is
foremost as it establishes a mutual
understanding and cooperation between
both. This cooperation allows both
rider and horse to work confidently
together in balance, which in turn
promotes harmony. Rider Horsemanship
focuses on finesse, not force, and
the results are achieved more smoothly
and easily than most riders could
possibly imagine. |
